Analysts at Piper Sandler have published a forecast predicting Grand Theft Auto VI will sell more than 45 million copies within its first 24 hours on the market. If accurate, that would make it the biggest entertainment launch in history — not just gaming, but any entertainment product ever released.
The Numbers in Context
GTA V sold approximately 11 million copies in its first 24 hours in 2013. The Piper Sandler forecast of 45 million would represent roughly four times that figure. For further context, the biggest single-day movie openings in history gross around $250 million — equivalent to perhaps 3 to 4 million tickets. GTA 6 at 45 million units at $79.99 would generate roughly $3.6 billion in a single day.
Why the Numbers Are This High
Three factors drive the outsized forecast. First, the installed base of PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles is significantly larger now than the PS3 and Xbox 360 base was in 2013. Second, digital distribution means no supply constraints — anyone with a pre-order or launch-day purchase downloads immediately. Third, the cultural gravity of GTA 6 is unlike any game ever made. Trailer 2 alone accumulated 165 million views. These are numbers that cross the boundary from gaming audience to general pop culture.
Take-Two's Position
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has publicly described Rockstar as building "the best entertainment on earth." The company has invested what is reportedly the largest development budget in gaming history into GTA 6. At 45 million day-one units, the return on that investment would be immediate and enormous.
Should You Believe the Forecast?
Analyst forecasts for blockbuster games are notoriously difficult to get right. The 45 million figure is an optimistic ceiling, not a guaranteed floor. A more conservative baseline would put day-one sales in the 20 to 30 million range — still shattering every record in gaming history. Whatever the actual number, GTA 6 is going to be the biggest launch the industry has ever seen.
